A magnificent yak farm in Trentino-South Tyrol

Our yak and Highland cattle farm is strictly organic and can be admired in both summer and winter, either up close on our terrace or from our dining rooms. These curious, friendly creatures are well known for their long hair and horns, and their calves are so fluffy and cute that our guests can’t help but fall in love with them.

Their story began in 1995, when the Prinoth family decided to open a farm in the wide-open spaces around the hut. We started with two Highland cows and a bull and then added the yaks in 2006, creating The Yak Place Dolomites, which is now known far and wide.

The Yak Place Dolomites

The area around the Friedrich August hut offers the ideal conditions for these animals: pastures that stretch as far as the eye can see, pure water from Mt Sassolungo/Langkofel, hay for winter, and air that’s always fresh and clean. These favourable living conditions extend the life span of these breeds of cattle. Because our animals are happy and healthy, they give us top-quality meat.

Fascinating facts about our Highland cattle farm

Usually, one of our cows can give birth to up to 15 calves, has no need for a stable or special care, and easily adapts to temperatures as low as -30°C.

The mothers are known as suckler cows, as the milk they produce all goes to their calves, which are born out on the pasture from the end of winter to spring (February to May). That’s why we can call our farm organic!

Our yak and Highland cattle farm in Trentino-South Tyrol is a big hit with hikers of all ages who visit our hut.
